Firsts Have a Funny Way of Changing Everything

Firsts are funny things.

From the outside, they often look very small.

The first reader.

The first order.

The first copy placed somewhere new.

The first person who says yes.

The first collaboration.

The first little corner with your name on it.

None of these things usually arrive looking particularly dramatic.

There is no orchestra.

No confetti.

Nobody announces that your life has just moved half an inch in a completely new direction.

And yet, somehow, it has.

Because the first time something happens, it quietly changes the border of what you thought was possible.

Before the first reader, you wonder whether anyone will understand what you wrote.

Afterwards, you know that at least one person did.

Before the first place says yes, the idea still feels like yours alone.

Afterwards, there is suddenly somewhere else in the world where it belongs too.

That is why I think firsts matter so much.

Not because they are the biggest moments.

But because they are proof.

Proof that something which once existed only in your imagination has managed to cross over into real life.

Soon, Quiet Lemon House will have its first little venue corner.

There will be books.

A few small things to discover.

A passport waiting for its first stamp.

Perhaps a lemon or two.

And hopefully, some curious people who happen to find their way there.

It will not be a loud beginning.

That would probably be very unlike us anyway.

It will be small, warm and a little bit lemony.

But it will be a first.

And firsts have a funny way of changing everything.
