Some Things Take Time to Become Real
There is a strange moment when something that has lived in your head for a very long time suddenly becomes an object in your hands.
You look at it and think:
Oh.
You’re real now.
For the longest time, this book was anything but a book.
It was scattered sentences.
Half-finished thoughts.
Notes written at inconvenient hours.
Pages moved around, deleted, rewritten and put back again.
A lemon here.
A strange thought there.
Eventually, there was a manuscript.
Then a cover.
Then a printed book.
And now, somehow, there is a box.
A pouch.
A little edition of fifty.
Things I can pick up, arrange, wrap and send into somebody else’s life.
I think this is one of the nicest things about making anything.
For a long time, there is almost nothing to show.
The work exists somewhere between imagination and reality, and you are the only person who can see what it might become.
Then, slowly, the invisible starts becoming visible.
One page.
One decision.
One tiny detail at a time.
Until one ordinary evening, you put everything together, close the lid, and realise:
There it is.
Not everything arrives with fireworks.
Some dreams arrive quietly in a box on your table.
And sometimes, that is even better.
