Some Lemons Just Sit There
Some lemons do not become lemonade.
Some simply become proof that you no longer hold life the same way.
And some simply sit there looking philosophical until years later.”
— Life: A Collection of Lemons
We have a strange habit of wanting everything to mean something immediately.
Something happens, and almost before we have finished experiencing it, we start asking:
What was the lesson?
Why did this happen?
What am I supposed to do with it?
How do I turn this into something good?
We are remarkably impatient with our lemons.
We want to squeeze them, sweeten them, pour them over ice and announce that we have grown.
Preferably by Friday.
But life does not always work that quickly.
Some lemons arrive without instructions.
They sit quietly on the counter while we walk past them every day, occasionally wondering what on earth they were doing in our lives in the first place.
And perhaps that is perfectly fine.
Not everything has to become wisdom immediately.
Not every disappointment needs an inspiring conclusion.
Not every mistake needs to become a life lesson by tomorrow morning.
Not every strange chapter needs to make sense while we are still standing inside it.
Sometimes understanding comes much later.
One ordinary afternoon, years from now, you may suddenly remember something that once confused you terribly.
And you will think:
Oh.
That was what it was teaching me.
Or perhaps you will laugh and realise it was teaching you absolutely nothing.
It was simply a lemon.
That is allowed too.
Life is not an endless assignment where every experience must be analysed, highlighted and turned into a meaningful paragraph.
Some things need time.
Some things need distance.
And some lemons just need to sit there looking philosophical for a while.
So if there is something in your life that still does not quite make sense, perhaps you don’t need to force an answer out of it today.
Leave it on the counter.
Go make some coffee.
You can always come back to the lemon later.
